Finger hovering over his computer mouse,
Comfortably settled in an empty house.
Her smiling face framed by gushing comments,
The "Send Friend Request" button a source of constant torment.

With a rush of fear and a deep sigh,
He clicked the button: his end was nigh.
Would she delete the request and simply move on,
Or lambast him for being such a moron?

Boop! A notification on her phone lock screen.
That friend request which couldn't be unseen.
A swipe of her finger and deft click,
New notification: Kate is now friends with Nick.

"Hi! How's it going? Remember me?
We met at Hannah's house party"
"Oh yeah! You were the guy with the cute shirt"
Gosh, why aren't there lessons in how to flirt?

Awkward messages turned to poke warfare,
Their nauseating online PDA was sending people spare.
With each and every date, a step closer to sex,
Which was solicited with a cringe worthy text.

As couples all too often do,
Their love turned to virtual gloom.
A poke did not suffice when she needed an embrace,
A screen would never replace his smiling face.

Smileys turned to incandescent frowns,
Gone were the days of halos and emoji crowns.
Awkward silences marked by 'Seen' ticks,
Profiles were left alone, bereft of late night clicks.

Tagged photos melted away as they uploads selfies,
To predict this future you won't need the oracle of Delphi.
The relationship's end marked by words not spoken:
"Sorry, the profile link you're trying to access is broken".
